Note on academic degrees and positions in Poland
The Polish system of academic degrees and academic positions differs from systems used in the United Kingdom and other Anglophone countries.
The degree of Doctor (PhD) is awarded upon the defence of a doctoral dissertation.
The degree of Habilitated Doctor (dr hab.) is a post-doctoral degree awarded on the basis of significant and independent scholarly achievements. It does not have a direct equivalent in the UK system.
The title of Professor in Poland refer to a state-conferred academic title (awarded by the President of the Republic of Poland).
The position of University Professor (prof. ucz.) is an institutional appointment made by a higher education institution and does not correspond directly to the UK academic rank of Professor.
For reasons of clarity and international transparency, academic degrees and positions are rendered in English in a descriptive manner and should not be understood as direct equivalents of academic ranks used in the United Kingdom or the United States.
